Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post. I like your photo and am grateful for the Wiki link. I have experienced this phenomenon while walking the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge with a fog bank below me, and once standing at the rail on the sidewalk. Until now I had no idea what was going on except that my co-worker next to me didn’t show up in the shadow, and when I walked off the halo and shadow went with me.

You’re welcome, Allan. The plane I was in was too far away from the clouds for its shadow to show up in the center of the glory I photographed. We were descending at the time and I was hoping we would get close enough to see the shadow. Unfortunately we flew into clouds before we got close enough and the glory faded away. Was your shadow in the ones you saw? That would have been awesome!
Well, maybe not completely silly as the photo is a ‘frozen’ moment in time and you have no context for motion or its direction. In actuality the halo appeared to be traveling along the surface of the clouds at the same speed and direction of the plane. Kind of a ghostly partner, as it were, flying in formation.

Yes, my shadow was in them. I’ll have to dig through my files and see if I have any of the photos.

From my vivid imagination is appears that a missile is headed your direction. Of course that’s silly, isn’t?
